I had a Nantucket Nectars (Pomegranate Pear) fruit juice today. It was quite tasty and offered the following tidbit on the bottomside of the bottlecap:
“The old Nantucket term for extravagance was ‘Two lamps burning and no ship at sea.’”
Not being from Nantucket, I sort of missed the meaning. Lucky for me Voice of America was there to fill in the gaps:
“Here’s the meaning: Coastal dwellers used to burn a light in a window to help ships navigate, or to welcome someone home from the sea. So if there are two lamps burning and no ship at sea, it means you’re a foolish person, wasting your time and wasting good fuel.”
